Podiatrists Professional Indemnity Policy Print

The APodC refers members to Guild Insurance for Professional Liability insurance.

Podiatry has traditionally been a relatively 'safe' profession, but it is not immune to the increase in litigation against healthcare professionals generally.

Benefits of Guild's Podiatrists Professional Indemnity Policy include:

  • Breach of Professional Duty,
  • Public Liability cover,
  • Products Liability cover,
  • Defamation (arising out of your practice),
  • Trade Practice Act cover,
  • Continuing liability run-off cover after retirement.

Legal Fees cover for disciplinary and coronial inquiries is also covered up to $100,000. You can elect to be covered for $5 or $10 million.

Do you need your own insurance if you work in the public sector?

Many Podiatrists don't take out their own insurance when they work in a public hospital. While it is possible that you'll be covered under the hospital's insurance policy, it is also possible that someone could take action against the hospital and you! It's also possible that the hospital's cover may not be adequate for the specific circumstances of the claim being made.

The Australasian Podiatry Council (APodC) and Guild recommend that all podiatrists have their own insurance cover.

Proactive Risk Management is your best protection

Even when taking all steps to provide the best care possible, incidents can still occur. However, by taking appropriate steps you can dramatically increase your ability to protect yourself in the event of an incident.

Guild is committed to assisting podiatrists to do just that. In addition to risk management articles being placed in APodC and Australian Podiatry Association (APodA) journals, Guild has recently produced GuildWatch: Risk Management for Podiatrists. This document provides a comprehensive analysis of the risks you face as a podiatrist and the steps you can take to minimise your risks.
